The Lacuna. It's enchanting. A novel in which Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Leon Trotsky appear as characters. The main character is a boy growing up in Mexico and the US in the '20s and '30s, clear up through the '50s, who becomes a writer. Not only is he a friend of known communists, but he happens to be gay - with predictable results.
And of course, "The Help." It generated the biggest book club meeting ever - 20 people - and kept us talking about it for over an hour. For us, who can dismiss a book in five minutes and get on to the wine and laughter, that's a very long time. If you haven't read it, you should.
